SONG BACKGROUND
This is a short-drag shanty. It is also called short-haul, sheet, or hand over hand. It is sung when the job of
hauling on a rope was expected to be quick with two or more pulls per verse and was used mainly for tightening the sheet.
In sailing, a sheet is a rope used to control the movable corner of a sail.
This shanty is believed to be sung on American ships after 1812. However, it was used much earlier by British sailors.
At the end of this lesson there is a glossary which explains the nautical and historical terms found in this
song. Our special guests, The Lost Quays, have recorded a unique version of this song to use with the students.
We create movements and add instruments to perform with the song.
